Why Back Up At All?

• Whilst hard discs are very reliable, they can and do fail.
• There will come a time when you will accidentally delete or overwrite the wrong file.

If that happened, would it matter?

• If you've put a lot of time and effort into the work stored on your Mac, it will.
• If you have irreplaceable material - photos etc. - then it will.
• If you use your Mac to earn money, it definitely will!

Time Machine

• You have Time Machine which will use an external drive to take care of your backup for you. However, if you like the "belt & braces" approach you could partition your drive into two (or buy two drives!) and have both Time Machine and a "conventional" backup.

What's needed?

• An external hard drive.
• Disk Utility - it's on your Mac now!
• Backup software (for ease of use) e.g. Time Machine or SuperDuper!
