Getting On Line
The Router - Connecting It All Together
A few routers are fussy (most aren't) about the order in which things are connected so do check the instructions that came with it
- Plug a microfilter into every phone socket that's in use by a landline - including the one the router will use - and then plug the phone(s) into those. For cordless phones, this applies to the base station.
- Find the telephone cable that came with the router and plug one end into the microfilter and the other end into the router.
- Find the ethernet cable (similar to but larger plugs than the telephone cable) that came with the router and plug one end into the computer and the other end into the router or connect wirelessly.
- Connect the router's power supply and power it up.
Again, look at the instruction book for your router but there will usually be a light which tells you it has power, another that it recognises that it is connected to an ADSL (broadband) line and others that may tell you when it has established a connection or which of the ethernet ports (if there's more than one) is active.
It may take a couple of minutes to recognise that the phone line does have an ADSL or VDSL service and it's not likely to connect to your ISP until you've completed the setup
