Getting On Line
Setting Up The Mac Manually
- New Location
- Set up a new location as shown on the previous page up to and including selecting the TCP/IP tab.
- From the Configure IPv4 drop down list choose Manually.
- Enter an IP address for the computer. The first three three digit figures must be the same as the router but the fourth must be unique. If your router is 192.168.0.1, the logical choice would be 192.168.0.2
- Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 - don't ask!
- Set the IP address(es) of the DNS Servers supplied by your ISP. If they haven't supplied any - ask for them or set it to the IP address of your router.
- Click Apply Now
Repeat this for any other Macs on your network. All the details will be identical with the exception of the computer's IP address which must be unique for each machine but again must start with the same first three digits - 192.168.0 in our example.
Set up an IP address on any other machines on the network (printers etc.) following their manufacturers' instructions. Make a note somewhere of each machine's IP address so that should you need it, you have a record of which is which.
Note also that if you are using Ethernet in one room of the house and Wi-Fi in another, each interface must be given its own IP address. See why DHCP is easier?
