Getting On Line
Wireless Security
- Each make of router will be different in detail but the process is broadly similar.
- Always use an ethernet cable for connection when possible and only use wireless for laptops which will be moved around the house or for a desk machine where it would be inconvenient to cable.
- Always set up using an ethernet connection. Revert to an ethernet connection for troubleshooting.
- It is of course important that you are able to connect to the Internet as outlined on previous pages before attempting a wireless connection. If possible, click Apply and with Wi-Fi turned on on your Mac check that you can connect at each stage of this procedure.
- Access the router's setup page and select Wireless Settings.
- Give your network a name - known as SSID. It's desirable but not vital that this name does not give a clue to your identity or location. Try not to leave it set to the router manufacturer's name. Enable wireless use.
- Select a form of security - WPA3 if available. If not, WPA2.
- Create a password.
- Disable broadcasting the SSID so that casual users cannot see that the network exists.
- Click Apply Now
If it's at all possible, to test each stage, use one Mac connected by ethernet and making these changes whilst another attempts the wireless connection, it makes life a lot easier! Of course, you can complete all stages and test at the end but if you don't connect, you'll have to work your way back, undoing each stage to find the error.
